Visions and Values
In Year 6, we want all pupils to feel part of an inclusive and positive learning environment where they are motivated to work hard and take pride in their work. Kindness and collaboration are also key values in our classroom. Everyone in Year 6 should feel like a valued and respected member of a class that works together as a team. Our Academy rules encourage the children to be ready, be safe and be respectful.
Curriculum Information
English: Over the course of the year, we will be using Jane Considine's "The Write Stuff" teaching units. As part of this, we will be using our "Writing Rainbows" to create excellent pieces across a range of genres. This will help us improve our vocabulary, sentence structure and writing composition. We will be writing both fiction and non-fiction pieces, including an adventure story based on 'The Journey' by Francesca Sanna, a persuasive speech and war poetry.
Maths: Throughout the year, we will be working with numbers up to 10,000,000, recognising the value of the digits and securing the four operations before moving onto fractions, decimals and percentages.
P.E:
PE will take place on Monday and Friday afternoons. Children must arrive at school wearing their school PE kits. Earrings must not be worn for P.E. so the children can take part in all of the lesson.
Autumn 1: Dance and gymnastics
Autumn 2: Leadership and quicksticks
Spring 1: Netball and health related fitness
Spring 2: Tennis and gymnastics
Summer 1: Yoga and rounders
Summer 2: OAA and athletics
Science: This is taught every week. Within the lesson, the children will be expected to work scientifically, write predictions, test their ideas and write their own conclusions.
Topics that will be covered over the year are as follows:
Animals including humans (circulatory system)
Electricity
Animals including humans (water transport)
Light
Living things and their habitats
Evolution and inheritance
History:
This term, we will be learning all about how World War 2 impacted our local area. Our focus will be on East Anglia and the importance of the airbases built there.
Other history topics this year include the Windrush generation and significant monarchs.
Music - We will be working with our specialist music teacher mastering the African drums as well as singing, composing and using a range of musical instruments.
Geography: Over the course of the year, our geography topics include learning about natural disasters, settlements and completing a comparison study between the UK, Europe and North America.
Homework
Homework
Our approach to homework this year is building on children's basic skills. As a result, children should be accessing TT rockstars and reading their AR reading books every day. Homework will be set on our home learning platform, Atom Learning, where they will have one piece a week. This will be released every Wednesday, and they will have a week to complete it.
Reading at Home
We would like all children to read at home as much as possible. At Welland, we want to encourage a love of reading for our children - please encourage them to read a wide range of books to support their reading but also for their own personal enjoyment. We will send the children home with AR books from our library.
