Science

Intent

At Welland Academy, we encourage children to be inquisitive throughout their time at school and beyond. Our Science curriculum fosters a healthy curiosity in children about our universe and promotes respect for the living and non-living. We believe Science encompasses the acquisition of knowledge, concepts, skills and positive attitudes. At Welland Academy we encourage pupils to aspire when looking to the future, and value tangible experiences. We use CUSP (Curriculum with Unity Schools Partnership) as a base curriculum for Science, written by Alex Bedford. Our curriculum has an emphasis on oracy and vocabulary acquisition, retention and use this to break down learning barriers and accelerate progress. A rich diet of language and vocabulary is deliberately planned for.

Implementation

Science is taught through the areas of learning in accordance with the EYFS framework and the National Curriculum for Ks1 and KS2. Our science curriculum is logically organised, with a clear sequence of progressive skills to ensure children develop a coherent knowledge of scientific concepts and processes. Opportunities to develop children’s ability to work scientifically are embedded within lessons to develop their skills throughout their school journey.

Knowledge organisers and knowledge notes are used to make new vocabulary and learning explicit to children. Planned retrieval is embedded into our planning. This regular revision of key knowledge allows pupils time to embed this into their long-term memory. Enhancements through trips and outside visitors enrich learning experiences. Science week and Eco-Committee serve to raise the profile of the subject at key points throughout the year.

Impact:

We measure the impact of our science curriculum in the following ways:

  • Tracking of knowledge in cumulative quizzes.

  • Pupil discussions about their learning.

  • Assessment via Insights to support progress and attainment.
